New York?s Next Generation of Vehicular Cyclists

This video critique of the new bike lane on First Avenue has been making the rounds, and it must give some comfort to John Forester and the vehicular cycling school. Vehicular cyclists reject all forms of bicycle-specific infrastructure and believe all cycling should be done in traffic. In this vid they can see a young [...]

Opinions Vary On Wisdom Of Double-File Restarts

When TV announcers first blathered on about NASCAR’s “Shootout Style” double-file restarts as if the concept was brand new, hard-core racers everywhere laughed, knowing the Cup drivers all learned to race that way. Then the trend hit World of Outlaws sprint-car racing, where all but the original starts have traditionally been single-file, and laughter morphed into complaints. But by mid-season, most WoO regulars had grudgingly accepted the format, espousing the standard lines “it’s good for the fans” and “we’ve gained on some and lost on others” when queried about the change.

Paris 2010: 2011 Bentley Continental GT, live and in the flesh

2011 Bentley Continental GT live debut - Click above for high-res image gallery

Here is your first glimpse at the redesigned 2011 Bentley Continental GT as it makes its world debut at the Paris Motor Show. Earlier, we mentioned that it will receive a nearly four percent price hike over the previous model, which is nothing compared to the overall improvements the new car has received.

Like any car, it has good and bad angles (obviously, the exception to this rule is the Maserati GranTurisumo which looks beautiful from every angle...) - we'll hold off final judgment until we can see it outside in natural light, not surrounded by a mob of flash bulbs and clamoring journalists. See for yourself in our high-res gallery of live images below.

Jaguar C-X75 range-extended electric supercar concept shows future styling hints

Jaguar C-X75 concept
Jaguar C-X75 concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

Jaguar has this to say about the genesis of the C-X75 Concept, which will be unveiled live tomorrow at the Paris Motor Show: "The aim was to produce not only the most innovative but also one of the most beautiful Jaguars ever; one which hints at an exciting evolution of the marque's award-winning design language while paying homage to some of its most admired cars of years gone by."

The result is the car you see above. The 2,970-pound C-X75 is "a range-extended electric supercar" that does the run from zero to 62 miles per hour in 3.4 seconds. That happens courtesy of two 96-horsepower micro gas turbines that pump juice into a plug-in li-ion battery pack. That in turn powers four 195-horsepower electric motors - one at each wheel - for a total of 780 horsepower and 1,187 pound-feet of torque. Top speed is pegged at 205 mph, and the concept can theoretically run on just its batteries for 68 miles before the twin turbines kick in and extend the range to 560 miles. Think of it like the Volt, but with turbines instead of a gas engine and a helluva lot quicker and faster.

The body resting above all those electrons is aluminum, with swan doors allowing entry to the leather-lined cabin. The seats inside are fixed, with the steering wheel, instruments and pedals moving to accommodate the driver. Three high-res TFT screens present driver information, with readouts and displays switchable between all of the screens.

The C-X75 is a pure concept - there are no plans to make it. The point, rather, is to show what kind of Jaguar might exist were such a cat unchained from any production consideration. Yet, although we won't see the beast in its entirety, we could see its fangs and claws on a production Jag in the future.

Follow the jump for Jaguar's press release with all of the official info and have a closer look at the C-X75 concept in our high-res gallery of official photos while you wait for us to return with live photos from the show floor of the Paris Motor Show.

UPDATE: Video added after the jump.

Report: No more Dodge vehicles for UK buyers

Redcoats vs. Dodge logo

The Dodge "Freedom" ad still stands out in our minds as an example of excellent automotive advertising. The spot shows British troops patrolling on U.S. soil when a cavalry of American troops are led out of the woods. Helming the charge is a no-nonsense George Washington behind the wheel of a Dodge Challenger. The British troops flee and the U.S. marches on towards its eventual freedom from the Queen's empire. Fast forward a few hundred years and our friends across the pond are not buying Dodge vehicles the way the automaker would prefer, and company insiders have told Autocar that the brand will no longer sell cars in the United Kingdom.

Recently, Dodge pulled the plug on the Nitro and Caliber due to dismal sales. Now we hear it has also waxed the Journey from price lists - the last Dodge model for sale over there. According to Autocar, Fiat plans to utilize the existing dealer network to launch Chrysler-badged Lancias throughout the UK and Europe.

It's typically sad news to hear an automaker forced to pull out of a specific region or area, but in this case, it seems like Chrysler and Fiat are making smart choices. If the two work together to sell the right vehicles where people want to buy them, then this American-Italian marriage is getting off on the right foot.

Hatchbacks: Who says Americans don't buy 'em?

2011 Ford Fiesta hatchback
Hatchbacks and their sedan counterparts - Click above for high-res image gallery

There's a well-worn cliché that is uttered periodically by just about every product planner and PR wonk in the auto industry - one that's been dutifully parroted by the journalists and enthusiasts that surround them, and it goes something like this: "Sorry, fellas, Americans just don't buy hatchbacks." Typically, that chestnut is trotted out whenever an automaker is compelled to explain why a particularly desirable new hatchback won't be sold in U.S. showrooms. Thing is, this commonly accepted bit of wisdom isn't as true as we've been led to believe.

The hatchback accounts for 60 percent of Fiesta sales.
Just ask Ford, who announced today that its new-for-2011 Fiesta is selling more in five-door guise than it is in its more traditional four-door sedan format. According to figures the automaker has sourced from Ward's Auto, the jaunty hatch accounts for over 60 percent of the Fiesta's sales. Little wonder, perhaps, as Ford has seemingly devoted the Fiesta's entire marketing budget to that particular bodystyle.

As a further statement of faith in the viability of the utilitarian bodystyle, the Blue Oval is readying its 2012 Focus in both sedan and five-door formats, with the two-door Focus coupe being discarded in favor of the hatchback - a configuration unavailable since 2007. Ford sales analyst George Pipas nutshells what he sees as a growing trend:
"American car buyers have grown accustomed to the convenience of hatch bodystyles after years of owning SUVs and crossovers. Combined with a generation of younger drivers who have been exposed via the Internet to popular high-performance hatchback offerings in Europe and Asia, we may be seeing the beginning of a shift in buyer acceptance of hatchbacks."
Ford isn't alone in its bid to disprove that consumers are inherently averse to two-box designs because they feel they're cheap and frumpy - sensible as opposed to stylish. Autoblog recently inquired with a number of automakers who offer entry-level models available in both hatchback and sedan bodystyles, only to find out that in many cases, bubbleback models are outselling their trunked counterparts.

Sorting Through NASCAR's Sprint Cup Chase Contenders

The seventh edition of NASCAR's Chase for the Sprint Cup kicks off Sunday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway with 12 drivers scrambling to claim top honors for the 2010 season.

Who are these guys, and what chances do they each really have to bring home the hardware? FanHouse answers these questions below, in order of the initial seeded point standings:

1) Denny Hamlin, No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota | Hamlin has been NASCAR's streakiest driver of the season -- both good and bad. During a 10-race span toward the middle of the 26-race regular season, Hamlin notched five wins. The feat was all the more impressive because Hamlin was driving while still recovering from a knee injury that had been surgically repaired due to a ligament tear in the offseason.

But Hamlin, with his series-best six wins on the year, has also had stretches of drought. Until winning last weekend at Richmond, he had registered just three top-10s in the 10 previous races. Mechanical issues were at fault in some finishes, crashes in others. Regardless, Hamlin's championship run a year ago was derailed by the same issues. ODDS: 9-2

2) Jimmie Johnson, No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet (-10) | Going against Jimmie Johnson to win the 2010 Chase is a lot like going with the Utah Jazz to beat Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in the 1996 or 1997 NBA playoffs. Sure, John Stockton and Karl Malone winning the title over the Bulls -- six-time champions in the 1990s -- would have been the pleasing story. But it didn't happen then, and one is hard pressed to make a substantial case that Johnson will lose now.

Video: Moscow motorcyclist's crazy high-speed commute

Russian commute on Yamaha R1
Morning commute in Russia on a Yamaha R1 - Click above to watch video after the jump

Driving to work in the morning can be a tedious and annoying affair. At least, we imagine it is, since we are chained to the wall of a basement staring at a computer screen for 23.5 hours per day. One vehicle that can make any commute quicker is a motorcycle... perhaps even a stupid-fast literbike like the Yamaha R1.

Combine a rider with a need for death speed, a 25-mile commute through Russian traffic and a powerful two-wheeled samurai sword, and you get a video showing the "quick" way to work. Sometimes this two-wheeler even becomes a one-wheeler as rare empty stretches of road disappear when the nose goes skyward.

According to our tipster Andy (Thanks!), the title translates to "A couple minutes of my life could be more interesting than the whole life of the other people." It's certainly interesting, but we prefer pushing vehicles to our limit on a track. Regardless, the music choice is excellent and the riding would make Trinity jealous. We don't condone this type of action, but that doesn't mean we can't all check out the video, which you can watch after the jump.

Alonso confident of matching Red Bull

Fernando Alonso believes Ferrari has the pace to take the fight to Red Bull Racing in the Singapore Grand Prix - despite ending the timesheets well adrift of his title rivals. Alonso's best lap was more than one second slower than pace-setter Sebastian Vettel, but the final times disguised the Ferrari drivers' full potential ? with the Spaniard on Vettel's pace in the first two sectors on a quick lap before getting it wrong and running off track. That lap has left Alonso quite confident about his team's potential for the Singapore weekend ? as he eyes adding more valuable points to his tally to close the gap on championship leader Mark Webber

Tony Stewart Feels the Love After Crushing New Hampshire Finish

Editor's Note: FanHouse is teaming up with two-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart for weekly, in-depth spotlight stories as he competes in the 10-week Chase for the Sprint Cup. Stewart, driver of the No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevrolet, is contending to become the first owner-driver to win NASCAR's most coveted title since the late Alan Kulwicki in 1992.

As the sympathetic text messages, emails and cell phone calls rolled in Sunday evening, Tony Stewart showered, grabbed a Coca-Cola and the TV remote and simply lay on the bed in his motor coach inside New Hampshire International Raceway, flipping through the channels and contemplating one of the most heartbreaking days of his racing career.

As his mind raced, the two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champ kept going back to one image -- and it wasn't the moment he realized his race-leading No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevrolet was out of gas with a little more than a lap to go in the Chase for the Sprint Cup playoff opener earlier that afternoon.

Instead, Stewart's thoughts kept returning to the pleasantly surprising reception he received from the fans that day as his car silently and solemnly coasted around the track before getting a push into the garage.

"Maybe I was reading it wrong, but I felt like the crowd was applauding that we ran good and were appreciative of what we had done that day,'' said Stewart, who led three times for 100 laps and had a 1.3-second lead on the field when his car ran out of gas just before taking the white flag.

"There are times when you're the unpopular guy and they're cheering because you had bad luck. But I honestly didn't feel like that was the case Sunday and it was the one good feeling I had coming home this week. ''

NASCAR Warns Clint Bowyer's Team Over Technical Inspection

Close is apparently close enough when it comes to NASCAR's technical inspection team. So the sanctioning body, in what is part "courtesy call" and part "wake-up call," is warning the Richard Childress Racing team that its No. 33 Chevrolet driven by Clint Bowyer was dangerously close to failing inspection following the Sept. 11 regular-season finale at Richmond, Va.

NASCAR officials are scheduled to meet with team representatives Tuesday to inform RCR of their concern and they've held the car at their Concord, N.C., Research and Development facility since it was impounded following the race at Richmond International Raceway two weeks ago.

Although the car did pass inspection, NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said Tuesday, "The body was very close to the tolerances permitted and we want to point out to them how close it is. This is standard procedure.''

Poston said the only reason the car has remained at NASCAR's R&D center is because travel schedules didn't allow for an expedited meeting. Bowyer won Sunday in New Hampshire, the opening round of the 10-race Chase playoff, to vault from 12th in the standings to second.
